Throughout the campaign for reelection, the twisted politician Paul Madvig decides to clean up his past, associating to the respectable politician Ralph Henry and denying that the support of the gangster Nick Varna. Ed Beaumont, Paul's right arm, finds his body in the road After Ralph's son of Paul's sister Opal, has been killed. Nick uses the financial case of this Observer to induce the publisher Clyde Matthews touse the newspaper to increase the feeling that Paul Madvig could have murdered Taylor.
