Harlan County U.S.A.
In June 1973, coal miners in Harlan County, Kentucky, went on strike against the Eastover Mining Company's Brookside Mine. Eastover's reluctance to sign a contract (after the miners joined the United Mine Workers of America) sparked a year-long strike that involved violent clashes between gun-toting company thugs/scabs and picketing miners and their female supporters. Director Barbara Kopple puts the strike in context by providing some information on the miners' historical situation as well as the UMWA's history.
