The Profession of Arms
In the fall of 1526, Emperor Charles V orders Georg von Frundsberg to lead his German landsknechts on a march towards Rome. These soldiers are under the command of Charles V. In the midst of a severe winter, the inferior papal forces, which were headed by Giovanni de' Medici, attempted to pursue them. Despite this, the Imperial troops are successful in crossing the rivers that lie along their route and acquiring guns due to the dexterous maneuvering of its Lords. During the conflict, Giovanni de' Medici receives a falconet shot to the leg, which wounds him. The attempts to heal him are ultimately unsuccessful, and he passes away. Rome is under attack by armies loyal to the Emperor. The film depicts the difficult conditions under which war is fought and the lack of glory associated with it in a setting that is both beautiful and understated. Straightforwardly, it comes to an end with the proclamation that the chiefs of the army in Europe make after the death of Giovanni de' Medici that they would never employ fire weapons again because of the brutality they cause.
