Captured by smugglers when he had been just a hatchling, a macaw called Blu resides that a domesticated life in Minnesota and never learned to fly. Blu is supposed to become the very last of his own kind, however when word comes that a lone female, Jewel, lives in Rio de Janeiro, Linda and Blu visit meet her. Animal smugglers kidnap Jewel and Blu, however the set soon escape and begin Linda -- and a perilous adventure back to freedom.
