It Was a Faint Dream
The story takes place in Kyoto in the thirteenth century, when the Imperial court is ruled by the clergy. Shijo was a poor girl who was sold as a concubine to a powerful daima. She begins an affair with a State Councillor and the brother of a retired Emperor, bored with her life in isolation. She becomes a nun and traverses the country after realizing she is nothing more than a courtesan's plaything.
