John Hall is a drifter who wanders into a little town in Maine. He makes the decision to look for employment at the community business: a huge textile mill and needs a job. He is hired to function as"graveyard shift" -- from around midnight to sunrise -- and, together with a few others, he is charged with cleaning out the basement. This strikes against on the workers but then, as they move underground they encounter a monstrosity intent on separating them .
