Widowed Frank Fogle reluctantly embarks on a journey to spread his wife's ashes in a lonely lake in Ireland, promising to bring his estranged son, Sean, along. Leaving prison, Sean has no desire to go on a foreign road trip with his estranged father. A new start in California is required. When his vacation plans fall through, he unwillingly accepts his father's offer of a ticket to the West Coast and a commitment never to see him again.
