The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

Kikunosuke Onoue, the adoptive son of a famed actor and himself an actor specialized in female roles, realizes that he is only lauded for his performance because of his standing as his father's successor in late nineteenth-century Tokyo. Devastated by this, he seeks solace from Otoku, a household servant, and the two fall in love. Kikunosuke becomes adamant about leaving home and pursuing a career as an actor on his own terms, and Otoku supports him wholeheartedly.
