The Cigarette
LA CIGARETTE, Dulac's first film, is about a liberated young woman and her older husband, who feels she is having an affair, and it speaks to a true postwar masculinity crisis in France. Dulac mixes realistic tendencies with impressionistic visual association, using cinematic-specific techniques, editing, and more to create tension between modernity/antiquity, life/death, and masculinity/femininity.
