Shoah
Claude Lanzmann directed this 912 hour documentary on the Holocaust without using a single frame of archive footage. He speaks with survivors, witnesses, and ex-Nazis (whom he had to film secretly since they only agreed to be interviewed by audio). His interviewing style, in which he asks for the most minute details, is effective at adding up these details to provide a horrifying portrait of Nazi genocide events. He also demonstrates, or rather allows some of his subjects to demonstrate, that the anti-Semitism that led to the deaths of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust is still alive and well in many people who live in Germany, Poland, and elsewhere.
