A Thousand Clowns
Nick, who is twelve years old, lives with his Uncle Murray, a Dickensian character who reminds him of Mr. Micawber and who is always hoping something will go wrong. A social worker shows up and falls in love with Murray and a little bit with Nick. As the child welfare workers try to persuade Murray to become a traditional man (as a condition of allowing him to keep Nick), the nephew, who had previously admired his Uncle's iconoclastic attitude to life, attempts to mediate. When he succeeds, though, he is taken aback by his uncle's readiness to give in to society in order to save the connection.
